ABOUT
MRS. JENSEN

"Long after students leave my classroom, I want them to know they are music-makers; that they have a voice that matters; and that through music there is joy." Mrs Jensen

Leanne Jensen B.Mus., B.Ed A.D. is a graduate of Brandon University and has taught K-8 Music at St. Maurice School in Winnipeg since 2009. She holds her Level One Orff Schulwerk and Level One Kodály Certification from the University of Manitoba.

She is a classically trained singer and has performed with several musical groups in Winnipeg and Brandon including the Manitoba Opera Chorus, Reign of Sound,  World Village Gospel Choir, and the Brandon University Chorale.

Leanne has worked to advocate for Music Education in Manitoba schools. She was the chair of the Music Month Project, a joint celebration of music education with Manitoba Education, for more than a decade and was was a long-standing board member of the Manitoba Music Educators' Association. She is continuing to advocate for music education in school as the current President of the Manitoba Kodály Society.

Singing is Leanne's greatest passion and it is the center of her teaching. She believes that God has gifted everyone with a voice to sing with. Her biggest goal as a teacher is to provide joyful musical experiences for her students through games, songs and performances.

Some core beliefs of a Kodály inspired teacher are:

  • music is for everyone and the ability to read, write and think music is the right of every person

  • singing is the foundation of strong musical understanding.

  • musical learning should start at a young age.

  • music education is necessary for the development of the total person (music should be at the core of the curriculum (affective, cognitive, psychomotor)
